Olympic Games : 27 July – 12 August 2012

Paralympic Games : 29 August – 9 September 2012

The Olympic and Paralympic Games are the world’s greatest sporting event but London 2012 is about more than London and more than sport. It is a Games for London, the UK and the rest of the world, for sport and culture, for volunteers and business.

14,700 athletes are expected to arrive and take part in 771 sporting events over the six week period.

Not all those venues are in London; Wales will host part of the Olympic Football tournament at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, along with Newcastle, Coventry, Glasgow, Manchester and Wembley.

There are 28 teams and 504 athletes involved in the Football alone.  There will be 58 matches in 18 days, and the football competition kicks off two days before the Opening Ceremony begins!

Wales will host circa 11 matches in the tournament.

London 2012’s ambition is to create a Games for everyone, where everyone is invited to take part, join in and enjoy the most exciting event in the world. For information, here's the current competition schedule and ticket prices.

There are over 200 countries taking part in London 2012.  Most of these athletes need a place to train in the run up to the Games, and Wales has been particularly successful in attracting Olympic and Paralympic Committees.  Check out the PGT section below for more information.

The Opening Ceremony isn’t the only cultural event taking place around the Games, click on the Culture link below for more information, and check back regularly for updates.

London 2012 will create the most accessible and participative Games. It will touch people as it has never done before, stimulating people to do more and to try new things and reassess what we are all capable of.
