Fun outdoor activities for families

Wales is the perfect location for families who love the outdoors and if you want adventure spend the day coasteering.

Perfect for teenagers and big kids, kit up with a wetsuit, buoyancy aid and helmet and you’re ready for action. Coasteering involves climbing, scrambling and swimming around the rocks and into hidden caves, pausing occasionally to throw yourself off a cliff into the waves below. Instruction is essential so always go with a specialist activity operator.  Coasteering can be as peaceful or extreme as you want but everyone agrees it’s incredible fun.

Grab your board and catch a wave

As part of your family holiday take the kids to the beach for a surf lesson.  All along our coastline you’ll find qualified surfing schools offering full and half day courses and activity weekends.

Surfs Up

Surfing schools provide a beginner's board and full wetsuit, and your instructor should have you on your feet and riding in a couple of hours. Surf schools usually teach in a small group but one-to-one tuition can be had.

Most surf schools will be open from Easter until October and the sea is 'warmest' in late summer and early autumn.

Have a wild day out dolphin spotting

Kids will love taking a boat trip out on the open water to spot the different sea creatures that live in Wales’ coastal waters.  Sightings aren’t guaranteed – but if you strike it lucky, it can be life changing.

Wales is home to three species of dolphin, harbour porpoises, minke whales, seals, huge basking sharks, weird-looking sunfish and even leatherback turtles.  Take a wildlife boat trip and see how many dolphins, whales, seals and sea birds you can spot.
